Utility Locates: Call Before You Dig
Public and private utility-locate responsibilities before fence posts or anchors are installed.
Locates are required
Ground disturbance must not begin until required utility locates are complete, current and visible. Saskatchewan customers can request public-member utility locates through Sask 1st Call. Applicable requirements vary by location and project.
Public locates do not cover everything
The property owner or customer must identify private and secondary facilities that a public utility service does not mark.
- Irrigation and sprinkler lines.
- Private electrical, lighting, gas, water and communication lines.
- Septic systems, wells, drainage, invisible-fence wiring and lines serving outbuildings.
- Any facility installed or altered privately after the utility connection point.
Protect the markings
Keep paint and flags visible and advise the project team of every known facility. Work may be paused when locates are missing, expired, unclear or inconsistent with site conditions. Damage to an unmarked private facility is handled under the signed project terms.
